It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23rd of February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could network, exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

July 1, 2021 officially begins our 2021-2022 Rotary Year, and Michelle will installed as our District Governor for Rotary District 5890 at her "Peace, Love, Funk" Installation Celebration.
Michelle has served the District in numerous ways, including District Conference Chair for the Geaux Rotary Conference and All Club Chair for many of our Past District Governors.
Michelle has been recognized as Rotary District 5890 "Assistant Governor of the Year" and "Rotarian of the Year". Most recently she received the "Service Above Self Award", Rotary International's highest individual recognition.
Michelle is a Paul Harris Society Member, Major Donor and Bequest Society Level II to
The Rotary Foundation.

Our 2021-2022 District Governor, Michelle Bohreer, is very excited about a project she is planning for the next few months, "Rotary District 5890 Grove Park." Trees will be planted and benches will also be installed.
Funding for the project will come from local Rotary clubs, plus from contributions made to Rotary District 5890 Charities, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Rotary Fire Fighters Home , which provides accomodations for first responders undergoing cancer treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center , is excited to announce that it will be opening its fifth apartment the end of September this month, courtesy of the Texas State Association of Firefighters . They are paying for the lease and utilities for this new apartment for two years! (This is in addition to the other apartment, which they are also sponsoring).
As we have done with our other 4 apartments, we have established a "registry" with Target. On this registry, we have selected items we still need in order to finish furnishing the new apartment.
The Rotary Clubs of Space Center, Greater Houston Veterans, and Pasadena held the "ribbon cutting" for their Peace Monument at a Patriot Day event on 9/11/21. The monument is styled after the Freedom Tower with "May Peace Prevail On Earth" written on each of the 8 sides in a different language is approximately 25 feet tall and will be lit at night.
This beautiful monument is located in Clear Lake Park, Landolt Pavilion located at 5002 E. NASA Parkway, Seabrook TX.
The dedication was held on the 20th Anniversary of September 11th and included tributes to the bravery of those that were lost that day, those that served our country, and also those that continue to keep our great county the land of the free, and the home of the brave! Rotary e-Club of Houston Rotarians Saving Venezuelan Refugees
| | Cristal Montañéz-Baylor, a member of the Rotary e-Club of Houston in our Rotary District 5890, has a featured story in the July 22, 2021 " Rotary Voices ", which is Rotary International's Blog that shares stories of service from around the world. Cristal serves as the International Coordinator for Hope for Venezuelan Refugees , a pilot project led by her Rotary e-Club of Houston, District 5890 International Committee in partnership with Rise Against Hunger (RAH), Rotary Cucuta, Diócesis de Cúcuta Banco Diocesano de Alimentos, and eight beneficiaries organizations, is saving and changing lives. Working tirelessly for years to help the refugees fleeing to Colombia because of the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. Cristal, and her colleagues, responded by distributing meals and supplies needed for protection against COVID. When grant money stopped, she continued her response, but can now only offer soup and, she wishes, some hope to the refugees. |

| | OUR JOURNEY TO THE MOTHERSHIP DISTRICT CONFERENCE HAS BEEN DIVERTED, AND POSTPONED TO APRIL 2022!As we face the latest surge in COVID-19 cases, we are once again required to adapt and pivot. I have heard from the Mothership and unfortunately we will not be able to connect and hold our District Conference on Oct. 14-17. The City of Evanston is implementing new restrictions and our hotel would not be providing food and beverage or house keeping and could not confirm that we would be able to even use the ballroom. All of this is second to the health and safety of our members. So, we will not be journeying to the Mothership, but we will have District Conference. Right now, we are looking at combining our All Club, which was scheduled for April 30 with District Conference. Save the dates April 28 - May 1, 2022. Our District Conference Committee will meet tonight to outline alternatives and provide new details as soon as possible. We will be going to a location that doesn't require a flight. Stay tuned, please don't cancel your conference registration, you will not want to miss our District Conference. More to come soon. Peace, Love & Funk District 5890 Officer Installation Celebration
It was "Peace, Love & Funk" at our District Officer Installation Celebration on June 26th..., and it was a blast from the past! The Ballroom at Bayou Place was transformed into the 1960s, and 1970s with everyone wearing their favorites: bell bottoms, tie dye, beads, and everything disco!
There is a great article by Vicki Brentin ( Rotary Club of Houston Skyline ) in the May 11th issue of Rotary Voices, which is the official blog of Rotary International.
Vicki served as the COVID-19 Vaccination Coordinator for Rotary District 5890 and organization volunteers at multiple vaccine sites here in the greater Houston area. Her article gives a heartwarming peek into her efforts, and the connection she had with the volunteers, plus those receiving their vaccination.

| | The Rotary Club of El Campo and Rotary Club of Wharton worked with First Book, Disney and ABC 13 to help organize this book distribution project. Special thanks to DG Scott Rainey, and especially to Rotarian Sheila Armstrong (RC of Houston) with "First Book", and Jon King (RC of Sharpstown), for making this project happen. "Part of the magic was seeing the parents, who took time to bring their child to get the books. One mother, at around 10:30 AM, said "My son woke me up so we could come get the books". | | District 5890 has thoughtfully considered how to engage with the issues facing our society with respect to all human rights and dignity. We will always remain non-political in our endeavors and will seek to find common ground and understanding among all people. Our first step was to take an introspective look at how Rotarian's see and feel they are seen. We must first ensure we are not only respecting each other, however we must also seek to understand one another. The District supported this initiative of the Rotary Club of Houston Skyline and the Rotary Club of Houston with several collaborating clubs to host a panel discussion titled: A Conversation About Being Black - Stories You Don't Know From Rotarians You Do. This event was recorded, and captures the stories from Rotarians which graciously shared their stories and struggles which opened our hearts and minds. Burgundy Wine Estate Comes To District 5890 In Support To End Polio Now
| | Recently, a Dinner and Exclusive Wine Tasting was hosted at the home of Stan and Susan Galanski (Rotary Club of Space Center). 10 Rotarians from across the District attended and were served a three-course meal, that featured different wines from Chateau de Pommard (Beaune, France). For the occasion, the Chateau's Private Client Wine Advisor, Cedar Stoltenow, flew in to provide an educational presentation on the Burgundy Region, and describe the multiple facets of the five wines served throughout the meal. None of the wines presented are distributed in the U.S., as they were delivered direct from the Estate. The meal was completed with a Key Lime Pie for dessert and the pouring of a 25-year old Chateau d'Yquem, a Bordeaux Sauternes. |
Historic: 47-Countries in African Region
Declared Free of Wild Poliovirus!
The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region.
After decades of hard won gains in the region, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) — WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance — are proclaiming the milestone an achievement in public health. They offer it as proof that strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance can rid the world of polio.
Rotary and its GPEI partners celebrate a monument achievement, say global eradication of wild polio is possible with the continued dedication and persistence of Rotarians.
This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary's top priority. The GPEI's challenge now is to eradicate wild poliovirus in the two countries where the disease has never been stopped: Afghanistan and Pakistan.

July 1, 2021 officially begins our 2021-2022 Rotary Year, and Michelle will installed as our District Governor for Rotary District 5890 at her "Peace, Love, Funk" Installation Celebration.
Michelle has served the District in numerous ways, including District Conference Chair for the Geaux Rotary Conference and All Club Chair for many of our Past District Governors.
Michelle has been recognized as Rotary District 5890 "Assistant Governor of the Year" and "Rotarian of the Year". Most recently she received the "Service Above Self Award", Rotary International's highest individual recognition.
Michelle is a Paul Harris Society Member, Major Donor and Bequest Society Level II to
The Rotary Foundation.

Our 2021-2022 District Governor, Michelle Bohreer, is very excited about a project she is planning for the next few months, "Rotary District 5890 Grove Park." Trees will be planted and benches will also be installed.
Funding for the project will come from local Rotary clubs, plus from contributions made to Rotary District 5890 Charities, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Rotary Fire Fighters Home , which provides accomodations for first responders undergoing cancer treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center , is excited to announce that it will be opening its fifth apartment the end of September this month, courtesy of the Texas State Association of Firefighters . They are paying for the lease and utilities for this new apartment for two years! (This is in addition to the other apartment, which they are also sponsoring).
As we have done with our other 4 apartments, we have established a "registry" with Target. On this registry, we have selected items we still need in order to finish furnishing the new apartment.
The Rotary Clubs of Space Center, Greater Houston Veterans, and Pasadena held the "ribbon cutting" for their Peace Monument at a Patriot Day event on 9/11/21. The monument is styled after the Freedom Tower with "May Peace Prevail On Earth" written on each of the 8 sides in a different language is approximately 25 feet tall and will be lit at night.
This beautiful monument is located in Clear Lake Park, Landolt Pavilion located at 5002 E. NASA Parkway, Seabrook TX.
The dedication was held on the 20th Anniversary of September 11th and included tributes to the bravery of those that were lost that day, those that served our country, and also those that continue to keep our great county the land of the free, and the home of the brave! Rotary e-Club of Houston Rotarians Saving Venezuelan Refugees
| | Cristal Montañéz-Baylor, a member of the Rotary e-Club of Houston in our Rotary District 5890, has a featured story in the July 22, 2021 " Rotary Voices ", which is Rotary International's Blog that shares stories of service from around the world. Cristal serves as the International Coordinator for Hope for Venezuelan Refugees , a pilot project led by her Rotary e-Club of Houston, District 5890 International Committee in partnership with Rise Against Hunger (RAH), Rotary Cucuta, Diócesis de Cúcuta Banco Diocesano de Alimentos, and eight beneficiaries organizations, is saving and changing lives. Working tirelessly for years to help the refugees fleeing to Colombia because of the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. Cristal, and her colleagues, responded by distributing meals and supplies needed for protection against COVID. When grant money stopped, she continued her response, but can now only offer soup and, she wishes, some hope to the refugees. |

| | OUR JOURNEY TO THE MOTHERSHIP DISTRICT CONFERENCE HAS BEEN DIVERTED, AND POSTPONED TO APRIL 2022!As we face the latest surge in COVID-19 cases, we are once again required to adapt and pivot. I have heard from the Mothership and unfortunately we will not be able to connect and hold our District Conference on Oct. 14-17. The City of Evanston is implementing new restrictions and our hotel would not be providing food and beverage or house keeping and could not confirm that we would be able to even use the ballroom. All of this is second to the health and safety of our members. So, we will not be journeying to the Mothership, but we will have District Conference. Right now, we are looking at combining our All Club, which was scheduled for April 30 with District Conference. Save the dates April 28 - May 1, 2022. Our District Conference Committee will meet tonight to outline alternatives and provide new details as soon as possible. We will be going to a location that doesn't require a flight. Stay tuned, please don't cancel your conference registration, you will not want to miss our District Conference. More to come soon. Peace, Love & Funk District 5890 Officer Installation Celebration
It was "Peace, Love & Funk" at our District Officer Installation Celebration on June 26th..., and it was a blast from the past! The Ballroom at Bayou Place was transformed into the 1960s, and 1970s with everyone wearing their favorites: bell bottoms, tie dye, beads, and everything disco!
There is a great article by Vicki Brentin ( Rotary Club of Houston Skyline ) in the May 11th issue of Rotary Voices, which is the official blog of Rotary International.
Vicki served as the COVID-19 Vaccination Coordinator for Rotary District 5890 and organization volunteers at multiple vaccine sites here in the greater Houston area. Her article gives a heartwarming peek into her efforts, and the connection she had with the volunteers, plus those receiving their vaccination.

Special thanks to DG Scott Rainey, and especially to Rotarian Sheila Armstrong (RC of Houston) with "First Book", and Jon King (RC of Sharpstown), for making this project happen. | | District 5890 has thoughtfully considered how to engage with the issues facing our society with respect to all human rights and dignity. We will always remain non-political in our endeavors and will seek to find common ground and understanding among all people. Our first step was to take an introspective look at how Rotarian's see and feel they are seen. We must first ensure we are not only respecting each other, however we must also seek to understand one another. The District supported this initiative of the Rotary Club of Houston Skyline and the Rotary Club of Houston with several collaborating clubs to host a panel discussion titled: A Conversation About Being Black - Stories You Don't Know From Rotarians You Do. This event was recorded, and captures the stories from Rotarians which graciously shared their stories and struggles which opened our hearts and minds. Burgundy Wine Estate Comes To District 5890 In Support To End Polio Now
| | Recently, a Dinner and Exclusive Wine Tasting was hosted at the home of Stan and Susan Galanski (Rotary Club of Space Center). 10 Rotarians from across the District attended and were served a three-course meal, that featured different wines from Chateau de Pommard (Beaune, France). For the occasion, the Chateau's Private Client Wine Advisor, Cedar Stoltenow, flew in to provide an educational presentation on the Burgundy Region, and describe the multiple facets of the five wines served throughout the meal. None of the wines presented are distributed in the U.S., as they were delivered direct from the Estate. The meal was completed with a Key Lime Pie for dessert and the pouring of a 25-year old Chateau d'Yquem, a Bordeaux Sauternes. |
Historic: 47-Countries in African Region
Declared Free of Wild Poliovirus!
The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region.
After decades of hard won gains in the region, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) — WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance — are proclaiming the milestone an achievement in public health. They offer it as proof that strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance can rid the world of polio.
Rotary and its GPEI partners celebrate a monument achievement, say global eradication of wild polio is possible with the continued dedication and persistence of Rotarians.
This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary's top priority. The GPEI's challenge now is to eradicate wild poliovirus in the two countries where the disease has never been stopped: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
